Experts estimate that 8% of men and 3% of women are affected by sex addiction. Individuals inaccurately believe that sex addiction is not a real addiction. However, sex addiction is dangerous and affects individuals and their families as alcohol and drug addiction. Sex addiction is defined as persistent and escalating patterns of sexual behavior acted out despite negative consequences to self and others (National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity, 2010).

    1 in 5 teens that date report that they have been hit, slapped or pushed by a partner and 33% of teens report being involved in an emotionally abusive relationship. It has become such a social epidemic that pediatricians have begun screening young patients for abusive relationships. Congress in the year of 2010 declared February to be National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Unfortunately, most individuals are not aware of how common teen violence is, they miss dismiss it as teenage drama or even worse blame the victim (Monitor on Psychology, 2010).
  • Tips to Protect Yourself from Sexual Assault (PDF)
    Rape is a crime of violence and aggression. The intent is to defeat, degrade, control and humiliate the victim. Rape affects victims from all socioeconomic classes and ethnic backgrounds. Rape victims can range in age from 3 months to 97 years. Women most vulnerable to rape range between the ages of 16 and 19; the second highest is for women between the ages of 20 and 24. Statistics estimate that as many as 60 to 80% of all rapes are committed by someone the victim knows.
